How it works

Uptrend: the move runs from the swing low up to the swing high. Retracements are measured back down from the high; extensions project above it.

Downtrend: the move runs from the high down to the low. Retracements are measured back up from the low; extensions project below it.

Traders often watch the 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% retracements for pullback entries and the 127.2% and 161.8% extensions for targets.

What are Fibonacci retracement levels?

Fibonacci retracements are price levels drawn between a swing high and a swing low at fixed percentages of the move: 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6%. Traders watch them as places where a pullback may pause before the trend continues. They are reference zones, not guaranteed turning points.

How do you calculate a Fibonacci retracement?

Subtract the swing low from the swing high to get the range. In an uptrend, each retracement level is the high minus the range multiplied by the percentage. In a downtrend it is the low plus the range multiplied by the percentage. Extensions use percentages above 100% to project beyond the swing.

Worked example

  1. EUR/USD rallies from a swing low of 1.0800 to a swing high of 1.1000: the range is 0.0200 (200 pips).
  2. 38.2% retracement = 1.1000 − 0.0200 × 0.382 = 1.09236.
  3. 61.8% retracement = 1.1000 − 0.0200 × 0.618 = 1.08764.
  4. 161.8% extension = 1.0800 + 0.0200 × 1.618 = 1.11236.
