How it works
A pip is 0.0001 on most pairs and 0.01 on pairs quoted in Japanese yen. On gold (XAU/USD) we use 0.10.
One standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency (100 oz for gold), a mini lot is 0.1 and a micro lot 0.01.
Pip value in the quote currency = pip size × units. It is then converted into your account currency with the exchange rate shown.

What is a pip in forex?
A pip is the standard unit for price moves in a currency pair. On most pairs it is the fourth decimal place, 0.0001; on pairs quoted in Japanese yen it is the second, 0.01. Pip value is what one pip of movement is worth in money for the position you hold, in your account currency.
How do you calculate pip value?
Multiply the pip size by the number of units you trade. That gives the pip value in the pair's quote currency. If your account is in a different currency, convert it at the current exchange rate. For a USD account trading a pair quoted in US dollars, such as EUR/USD, no conversion is needed.
Worked example
- One standard lot of USD/JPY is 100,000 units and a pip is 0.01: 0.01 × 100,000 = ¥1,000 per pip.
- With USD/JPY at 150.00, convert to dollars: ¥1,000 ÷ 150 = about $6.67 per pip.
- A 0.10 lot position is a tenth of that: about $0.67 per pip.
