How it works

Give each target a price and the share of the position you plan to close there. The shares should add up to 100%.

R is how many times the initial risk each target earns. The blended figure weighs each target by its share.

The loss figure assumes the full position is still open when the stop is hit. Moving the stop to entry after TP1 reduces it.

What is scaling out of a trade?

Scaling out means closing a position in parts at several take-profit levels instead of all at once. A common plan closes a third at TP1, a third at TP2 and the rest at TP3. It locks in some profit early while leaving part of the position open for a larger move.

How do you calculate a blended reward-to-risk?

Work out each target's reward-to-risk: its distance from entry divided by the stop distance. Multiply each by the share of the position closed there, then add the results. Targets at 1R, 2R and 3R with a third of the position each give a blended 2R if every target is hit.

Worked example

  1. Buy 0.30 lots with a 20-pip stop loss. If the stop is hit first, the full position loses 20 pips.
  2. Close 0.10 lots at each target: TP1 at 20 pips (1R), TP2 at 40 pips (2R) and TP3 at 60 pips (3R).
  3. Blended reward-to-risk = (1 + 2 + 3) ÷ 3 = 2R when all three targets are hit.
